Voidwood at PAX West

PAX West marked the first time we opened Voidwood up to the public.
We announced the game in August. Three weeks later we were in Seattle, in a booth we had been sketching for months, waiting to find out what a room full of strangers would do with the forest.

Then Friday morning came and there was a line.
The line

The line at Booth #744, with our engineer, DJ, marking the end!
Voidwood stayed packed through the entirety of PAX. The line wrapped around our entire booth, spilled into the aisles, and had to be capped multiple times. Even when we closed the line, people hung around waiting for another chance to play.
We are a small team and none of us have gotten used to that yet. There is a specific feeling that comes from seeing a row of people waiting to play something you made. The best part was never the length of the line. It was talking with fans eagerly waiting to play, watching games unfold on the big screen, or overhearing people strategizing before they got their chance to play!
What it looked like when you played
We put a large screen above the play stations so anyone walking past could see a live game in progress.

It turned out to be the best thing in the booth, because what it showed was not really gameplay. It was four people laughing, whispering, going completely silent, and then shouting at each other. That is the whole pitch. We did not have to explain it.
The tree, the axes, and the pin
We built a Voidwood tree for the booth so you could stand in a piece of the forest and take a photo in it. If you did, you walked away with a branded foam axe.
The axes got completely away from us, in the best way. By Saturday they were all over the convention center, carried by people who had never been to our booth, and every time we spotted one across a hall it made our day.
We were also part of Pinny Arcade this year. Our art director, Geoff, designed a pin based on the Voidwood tree, and we did not sell it or trade it. The only way to get one was to play the game. The pin community found us early Friday, before most of the show knew who we were, and several of our own team went home as new collectors.

Creators came to play
Creators and press came through all weekend, and many wanted to play more in the future and bring their audience along. Several came back later with friends to play again!!
Watching someone who plays games for a living lean into their mic and psych up their teammates is a very good way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Amazing to have Stream for a Cause drag content creators stop by!
Thank you
Thank you to everyone who played, waited, came back, took a photo with the tree, carried an axe around Seattle, or grabbed a friend and said you have to try this.
Since we announced in August, more than 10,000 of you have added Voidwood to your Steam wishlist. For a team our size, that is not a small thing, and we do not take it lightly.

Four stations, ready for another run.
The forest opens wider in October
PAX was one booth and four stations. Next we want a lot more of you in there.
We are preparing to open Voidwood through Steam Playtest in October so you can get into the forest with your own group. Dates and details are coming soon, so follow us on Steam, join our Discord or stay subbed to learn about those details very... very... soon!
